Posting Instructions

POST AS REQUESTED: The most commonly used posting instruction

• The cast is modified to sit neutral and then any additional posting is added to the orthotic.

• Hind-foot / Fore-foot position: Refers to the number of degrees from neutral the RF or FF will be tilted to sit at. If you want the orthotic posted to sit in the neutral, corrected cast position, then write “N” for the degrees requested. Otherwise, please specify the number of degrees and whether you want Varus posting (helps prevent pronation) or Valgus posting (helps prevent supination). Also circle Extrinsic or Intrinsic for posting type. Intrinsic posting is ground into the orthotic shell material to minimize bulk. For Extrinsic posting, material is added to the orthotic to achieve the desired correction. This is more bulky but generally more effective and stable.

• Extrinsic Fore-foot posting is either a Tip post (EVA added to the anterior edge of the shell) or Sulcus length (EVA added and extended under the MTP joints). Please specify when ordering. Note that Extrinsic Fore-foot posting is somewhat bulky and limits non-athletic footwear options.

Note: Sport Orthotics include sulcus length Fore-foot EVA extension.

• Hind-foot Motion: This refers to a specific Hind-foot posting technique which involves grinding the Hind-foot at two different angles – one to accommodate the Hind-foot position at heel strike, and the other to accommodate the Hind-foot position at midstance. The difference between the two angles is the degree of Hind-foot motion.

Other Important Information

When ordering orthotics always indicate the patient’s shoe size, weight and type(s) of footwear the orthotics are going to be used in.

When taking plaster slipper casts it is advisable to bisect the posterior aspect of the calcaneous and the 1st and 5th MTP joints on the foot with indelible pen. This will ensure our lab can design a functionally accurate orthotic.

When shipping be sure to pack both casts and foam impression kits with appropriate
protection. Our lab cannot fabricate orthotics from damaged molds or casts.
