How to cast your patients

Advanced Casting Techniques

Post till Cast Neutral
• The lab will alter the cast position.
• The orthotic will be posted to balance the Hind-foot in a neutral position (defined as when the calcaneal bisection line on the positive cast is vertical with the supporting surface).
Example: if cast sits 5 degrees VALgus, a 5 degrees VARus post will be added to the orthotic.
• Used when patient has a fixed Fore-foot deformity.

Post as Cast Rests
• The lab will not alter the cast position.
• Orthotics will be designed to allow the positive cast to sit in its natural resting position on a flat surface.
• Used when the patient has a fixed Hind-foot or midfoot deformity and the neutral position cannot be achieved when casting.

Post to Lab Values
• One of our technical staff will review the file to help you choose appropriate posting values.
• Please provide a detailed description of patient’s condition, foot type and lifestyle including recreational activities. Technical staff may call for clarification.

Other Important Information

When ordering orthotics always indicate the patient’s shoe size, weight and type(s) of footwear the orthotics are going to be used in.

When taking plaster slipper casts it is advisable to bisect the posterior aspect of the calcaneous and the 1st and 5th MTP joints on the foot with indelible pen. This will ensure our lab can design a functionally accurate orthotic.

When shipping be sure to pack both casts and foam impression kits with appropriate
protection. Our lab cannot fabricate orthotics from damaged molds or casts.
